Abstract

The work shows the attempt to describe Personal Museum as the creation of a particular person for a specific purpose. The work will dwell upon the tree star exhibits and analyze them from the view point of six keys of art.

Keywords: personal museum, exhibits, art.

Personal Museum

Personal Museum is always the possibility to show one’s creativity and one’s perspective on the world. I want my Personal Museum to be dedicated to the topic of ecology. The art usually shows the social, political and psychological state of people in some particular period. Nowadays, the world is concerned with the topic of ecology and preservation of an environment. Consequently, all of my exhibits will be dedicated to this topic only. There will be a lot of various paintings, posters, sculptures of modern artists. The museum would be in darkness, only the exhibits will be illuminated. The illumination will be also installed on the perimeter of exhibition rooms. However, there will be three star exhibits, which are going to be shown in the main exhibition room. The first star exhibit is the projected slideshow of the pictures of the sculpture by Jason de Caires Taylor ‘Inertia’. The slide show will demonstrate the sculpture from all possible angles. The artist uses the sculpture of a man sitting in front of the TV set to depict the very Inertia. This man is the actual mean of communication between the artist and the audience. The audience understands that the man is ignorant of everything except TV. However, the audience does not have the real possibility to examine the sculpture on their own as the sculpture is made underwater. That is why the main mean of communication will still be the reproduction of the sculpture in the form of slide or pictures. The sculpture is done in the form of man sitting on the couch watching TV and being ignorant to everything around him. We can also notice the fast food dinner on his knees, while his hands are also on the knees supporting the name of the sculpture. The plastic bottles under his legs and the broken toy show the apathy. The audience knows that the sculpture was created specially to become a habitat space for fish that is why the expectations of this fact create the interpretation of the sculpture as the one to be dedicated to ecology and environment preservation. Audience interprets the idea of the average person living in the current world being ignorant to everything what happens around, and being the main polluter of the planet Earth. The context of the sculpture is very peculiar, as the sculpture is situated 4 m deep under water in the MUSA Museo Subaquatico de Arte, near Cancun, Mexico. The sculpture was installed in May, 2011. Jason de Caires Taylor is an eco-sculptor that is the reason why he uses only environmentally-friendly materials, and they provoke coral growth. Due to his personal interest in the sphere, he created such sculpture and he wants to be a part of generative human help with ecosystems. The sculpture is interesting as the artist does not show his personal attitude as such. He depicts the picture of current population of polluter and leaves the space for audience to make their own choices. His style is eco-art. That is why he does everything to recreate the marine life and uses eco-friendly materials, which can be a special feature of his creativity. The second star exhibit of the museum is the picture by Jasmine Becket Griffith ‘A world in good hands’. The artist uses poster as means of communication between herself and the audience. The expressive features of the picture are very strong. The picture depicts a fairy that holds the planet Earth by her hands on her legs. The fairy has blue-green wings; the colors are the same as the prevailing colors of our planet. The eyes of the fairy area are bit sad, but the very image is magical. When we speak about the genre, i.e. the system of expectations governing interpretation, we can say that the audience expects the fairy to be a representative of the Mother Nature or the goddess who saves the planet, at least it is expected from the fact that the fairy holds the planet in her hands. The author has chosen such image for the picture in order to show the love for fairies, and to insist on love to planet Earth and the environment in general. The author does not insist on the saving of the planet; however, the facial expression and the sadness in the eyes of fairy is the hint that something is wrong with our planet. The style of the picture is very peculiar as it is animation. The features of this are the big eyes with special sparkles and unusual colors of hair and form of eyebrows. The picture would be exhibited on the white glossy paper. The third star exhibit would be the demonstration of pieces of the movie ‘Home’. This movie was filmed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The collection of aerial shots of different places of our Planet is the means of introducing the information to the audience. The form of the movie consists of shots of various places on planet Earth and how the humanity changed the ecobalance. The expectations from the film might be different, but audience expects it to reveal the truth about human activity and all the changes that appeared in the process of human-being existence. The movie has received a huge response upon release. When we speak about context, we should take into account that the movie was filmed in 2009, and the most peculiar feature is the fact that it was released in 181 countries at once. The director of the movie decided not to show any particular attitude in the movie. The movie provides the audience with numerous facts; however, there are not critical remarks. Despite the fact that the movie is a documentary, the director combined the music in such a way that it highlights the most crucial moment of Earth polluting or destruction by humans without pointing on a man directly. Audience can feel it only through sad and evoking music. These are the main exhibits, I would like to present in my Personal Museum, which will show the main ecological problems and represent different approaches to the problem.

The Analysis of Photography by Sebastiao Salgado ‘The vast tail of a Southern right whale’

The type of the photo is candid. It definitely was not posed; it is the image, which was caught by the author. The author uses black and white photo as a means of communication between himself and the audience. The physical feature of the photo is the depiction of the tail of whale. The audience can see the water falls from the whale’s tail, which psychologically creates the feeling of whale’s movement. This fact makes the picture alive and full of motion. The fact that it is black and white even sharpens these features. The intention of artist was to draw our attention to this part of the whale, which is probably the most active, and shows the scale and the difference between the human-being and whale. The expectation and interpretations in this case coincide. The author wanted to show the scale and the movement, and the audience is able to recreate this intention and expectations while viewing this photography. The context of the picture is not able to tell much more about it than the very photography. It was done by the artist in 2004 near Argentina. However, there are the whole seasons of watching after whales. As a matter of the fact, these shows might help a person to relax and to feel oneself as a part of wildlife. This fact is of crucial importance for the artist as he worked under a project which was described as ‘a letter to the planet’. This photography is the depiction of whale’s glory. This is shown due to the black-and-white format and the peculiar focus. The whale was photographed in Valdes Peninsula. Therefore, this is the place where whale are watched annually. The actual body of the animal is not shown. Basically, on the first sight it might not be understood that this is the whale, because there is nothing to compare with. However, when the name of the photography is known, the general picture is very easy to imagine in one’s mind. Moreover, it becomes understandable for the special pattern on the part of the body which is visible. The place where the photograph was done is also unclear from the first sight, however, in the process of analysis, the details on the background become important and the special landscape hint to the place of the photography being made. The black-and-white style helps to draw attention of the audience to the glory of the whale and the action of his tail. Though, the gentle circular lines help to flow gently across the photography. The perspective is the three dimensional qualities, helping to see the depth of the photograph, meaning the landscape, and the main focus, which is the actual tail. Even the contrast, which is created by small shadows and the play of light and dark, helps to see the glory of whale’s actions. The photography is very emotional. The artists used good framing of the tail by the water around and the landscape on the background which even helped to create the depth of the photography. The display of the animal is very interesting and it evokes a number of feelings concerning ecology and the wildlife in general.

Analysis of Advertising Campaign by Brandon Knowlden

Brandon Knowlden is a well-known art designer. He was the one who created the advertising campaign against obesity. This campaign had a name ‘Obesity is suicide’ (Knowlden, n.d.). The picture to be analyzed is the main picture of this campaign. It actually depicts the man hanging himself with the help of rope of sausages. The mean of communication here between the designer and the audience is the picture, which shows creative result of eating a particular product. The physical feature of the picture shows the audience the man of the middle age; we can conclude this from the fact that the audience can see several grey hairs, which probably suffered from obesity due to his double chin. The designer used cold color to create the picture. The color of t-shirt is rather dark and there is the grey brick wall as the background of the picture. The designer expected people to perceive the message and to interpret it as the call to start a healthy lifestyle. As a matter of fact, this picture might be used even now to warn people about the dangers of such phenomenon and obesity. However, it is known that this campaign was thought to be very controversial. It actually redirected people to a special website, which advertised the doctor who performed surgery. However, the doctor has never given the permission for any of these advertisements to be associated with his personality. The picture is the one of three. Together they help to draw attention to such a serious topic. Two other pictures depict a man who like a terrorist strapped butter sticks to his chest like a bomb, and a women who has overdosed on the candies. The author does not show the whole man on the picture, he decided to focus only on the neck. At the first sight, it is not understandable if the man on the picture could be saved or is the picture showing the agony and the impossibility of changing anything. However, due to the tension of neck muscles, it becomes clear that the situation could still be changed to better. The style on this picot is very peculiar, as the designer does not show any emotions; he focuses the attention of the audience on the action and no on the emotional side on the problem. The very action is presupposed to be an emotional breakdown here. The designer used three dimensional perspectives. It means that he focused the attention of the audience on the action and he used the background to show the depth of the picture. The setting is well-lit, but the arrangement of the display of the problem is even appealing. These pictures were created for the author’s portfolio and they actually never appeared world wide as a lot of people considered them to be highly offensive and negative.  However, a lot factors together make these picture a good advertisement, which catches the attention of the audience and does not leave the audience ignorant, which is the main aim of advertisement campaign.
